Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born April 4th April 1972. Scott was raised as an all-only daughter of her grandmother. Scott attended her school at the Philadelphia High School for Girls as well as Temple University after graduating. In addition to working two job opportunities, Scott was also a teacher in Temple University. She was hoping to become an high school English teacher. The dream however was ended when, after three years of study and being a teachers aide she dropped out of the college. Her career began with a performance artist who spoke words who performed her work in live poetry readings. Then she teamed up to Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. You Got Me is the outcome of their collaboration. The singer was at a Roots concert. Then, she began working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She was able to perform during the Canada tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was the first artist signed to Hidden Beach Recordings.
